Sam leads the way forCJ Motorsport at Wembley Stadium

Sam Bird led Team CJ Motorsport to triumph at the “Daytona 24 Hours” karting race on Wembley’s Race of Champions track over the weekend.

Sam was joined in the team by fellow CJ Drivers Franck Perera, Borja Garcia and Bruce Jouanny, as well as CJ Motorsport Directors Serge Celebidachi and James Olivier, CJ Photographer Clément Marin and Borja Garcia’s father, Jesus, aged 52. This self-imposed quadruple handicap, together with a number of extremely quick karting endurance specialist teams, meant that the CJ Pros were pushed all the way and had to display all of their skills to bring the team home in first place.

he campaign had begun on Saturday morning, when former World Karting Champion Franck Perera qualified team CJ Motorsport on pole position with a single flying lap.

At midday, the race got underway with Spanish star Borja Garcia the man chosen by Team CJ to open the hostilities. He duly obliged and managed to build a comfortable lead over the rest of the field before coming in after 90 minutes to refuel and hand over to Perera who further increased the lead.

However, the team dropped back when the (by their own admission) less competent drivers were on track, and Sam had a huge challenge to bring them back into contention. His masterclass in karting had the commentator and spectators enthralled, when he broke the lap record five times in the course of one and a half hours.

By Sunday morning, some less stellar pace from the non-pros and a ten minute mechanical repair on the kart meant that there was still plenty of work to do when Sam again took the wheel for a final two hour stint. However, the young Brit was happy to take on the responsibility and he drove superbly once again to take the chequered flag for team CJ Motorsport, as the clock struck midday on Sunday.

At the end of the race, CJ Motorsport Director Serge Celebidachi commented: “This was a great opportunity to get the boys together to have some fun, to reflect on a long tough season, and to look forward to a successful 2009.”

“Winning the race was a bit of a bonus really and the non-pros in our team made sure it would not be a foregone conclusion. But Franck, Bruce, Borja and Sam were magnificent and sure enough, they have won us yet another trophy for the CJ Motorsport trophy room. This one will hold a special place because they won it all together!”

A very tired but elated Sam said “I’m thrilled to stand on the top step of the podium with my team mates – this has been huge fun, the whole event was well run and I hope it will become a regular event”
