What I've been doing since Croft
Although we haven’t had a race meeting for three weeks, I’ve been really busy. I spend a couple of hours most days at the gym, either with my personal trainer, Jamie, working on specific areas of the body, or doing weights or aerobic exercises. This is such an important part of my life as a racing driver. I know a lot of people can’t believe that driving a car requires fitness, believe me, it does! When you’re physically fit, the mental side improves as well, and you have to have split second alertness when driving at 150mph!
As well as the gym, I like to play golf, again for fitness, but also for relaxation and being sociable, it’s where I meet up with friends and colleagues. I spent an enjoyable day playing in Oxford with the British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC), and won the prize for the best “Rising Star” of the day.
I also work as an instructor, and spent a busy day at Brands Hatch circuit in where I was teaching a group of people how to take the right lines around the track, and improve their general driving skills.
After a race meeting, it is always important to have a “debriefing” session with the team, so I go to Carlin, meet up with Mark, Michele and the rest of the team to look at data, talk about what was right or wrong with the previous weekend and how we can improve for the next race. We’ve had a test day at Rockingham, where the final round of the Formula 3 championship will take place this weekend, and I’m thrilled that we got it right and were P1 at the end of the afternoon session.
I’m off to Pembrey in now, to spend two days driver coaching for Carlin, with their young Formula BMW and Formula Renault drivers. After that, I will drive up to Rockingham in preparation for the weekend. It’s quite a long way, no wonder I do over 30,000 miles in a year!
