Watch the Birdie
It’s 1989, and the Bird family is settling down to watch the Grand Prix. For two-year-old Sam, gazing up at the screen from his perch in front of the TV it’s the start of a lifelong fascination with, and dedication to, motorsport. ‘From my first sight of these super-fast cars zipping around the circuit, I think I had an innate sense that that’s what I wanted to do,’ Sam said. ‘My parents were just pleased I was being quiet,’ he laughs. ‘I don’t think they could ever have realised then where it would lead.’ But then who could?
Fast forward, and 19 years after that first glimpse of Formula 1 Sam earned his first ever drive in a Formula 1 car - performing a series of aerodynamic tests with Williams in November 2007. ‘It was a dream come true,’ Sam tells me. ‘The speed was far more than I’m used to in Formula 3, the braking, the grip - everything.’ It was just brilliant.’
But Sam is quick to point out that his dream isn’t yet fully realised. ‘I’m not taking anything for granted. I thank Williams for a great experience, but now I want more. I’m hoping to line up on a Formula 1 grid and drive a Formula 1 car against some of the greatest drivers in the world...
